Ducted vs Non-Ducted: Which Ceiling Assembly You Need

The rooftop unit is the same either way. What changes is the ceiling assembly underneath it, and that is the part most sellers leave out of the box. Get this one right and the rest of the install is four bolts and a few wires.

Tell them apart in ten seconds

Non-ducted Ducted
What you see on the ceiling One large grille directly under the AC, about 20 x 20 in, with louvers that blow into the room. Controls are usually on the grille: a knob, buttons, or nothing (app or wall stat). A grille under the AC and several small vents spaced along the ceiling. Usually a wall thermostat somewhere in the living area.
Typical RV Travel trailers under about 30 ft, truck campers, vans, older rigs, most single-AC trailers. Fifth wheels, larger travel trailers, motorhomes, most two-AC rigs.
Ceiling assembly family Coleman 9430 (cool or heat-ready) and 9630 (heat pump). Called FDCA, free delivery ceiling assembly. Coleman 8330A763 (manual), 8430 ChillGrille (cool or heat-ready), 8630 ChillGrille (heat pump).
Control On the assembly: knob, Deluxe buttons, or Bluetooth app. Or a 12 V wall thermostat with the plenum version and a control package. Knobs on the 8330A763, or a 12 V wall thermostat with a ChillGrille. The ChillGrille has its control box built in; no separate package.

Non-ducted: which assembly

  • 9430E715 Deluxe: buttons on the grille, three fan speeds, heat-ready (takes the heat strip). The standard pick.
  • 9430-720 Bluetooth, cool only and 9430-725 Bluetooth, heat-ready: no buttons, controlled from the RV Comfort app on your phone. The 725 accepts a heat strip.
  • 9630-725 Bluetooth heat pump and 9630A715 Deluxe heat pump: for Mach 15, Mach 10 and Mach 8 Plus heat pump units only.
  • 9430-4552 plenum: non-ducted air delivery with a wall thermostat instead of grille controls. Needs a control package (8330-752 cool, 9330C755 heat-ready, 9530A751 heat pump) and a 12 V wall stat. The Non-Ducted Wall Thermostat Conversion Kit matches all three.

Every current 9430 and 9630 assembly fits Mach 3, 15, 10 and 8 Plus units. Coleman lists them as fitting all profiles.

Ducted: which assembly

  • 8330A763: manual ducted assembly with the temperature and fan knobs on the grille, cool only, no thermostat needed. The simplest ducted setup.
  • 8430A633 (white) / 8430A634 (black) ChillGrille, cool only and 8430A635 heat-ready: lateral duct assembly with the 12 V control box built in. Add a wall thermostat: 9420-352 or 9420-391 on the 633, 9420-351 or 9420-391 on the 635.
  • 8630A635 heat pump ChillGrille: heat pump control box built in. Add a heat pump wall stat: 9420-391 WiFi, 9420A382 or 9630-3351.
  • 8330A743: 24 V assembly for park models with a 7330B3441 24 V wall stat.

The separate control packages (8330-752, 9330C755, 9530A751) are for plenum-only assemblies and for replacing a failed box, not for a ChillGrille.

Can I switch?

Non-ducted to ducted needs ductwork in the ceiling, which is a build, not a swap. Ducted to non-ducted is possible (block the ducts, fit a 9430 assembly) but you lose air distribution to the bedroom. In practice, replace like with like and spend the money on the unit.

Going from knobs to a wall thermostat is a swap, not a build: see the Thermostat Upgrade Kits.

Order the right kit

Complete Non-Ducted Kits include the 9430 or 9630 assembly of your choice. Complete Ducted Kits include either the 8330A763 manual assembly or a ChillGrille with its wall thermostat. Every kit includes the new roof gasket; the mounting bolts come with the ceiling assembly.
